Council: Connecticut River Byway

About the Connecticut River Byway Council...Members from a variety of interests came together in 1999 to form a council to balance the promotion, preservation, enjoyment and stewardship of the Connecticut River Valley. In that year, the States of Vermont and New Hampshire gave official stamp to years of planning by designating a bi-state route for the new Connecticut River Byway along New England's largest river.

Our goal is to raise awareness of its unique historic cultural, environmental, agricultural and railroading traditions and resources. We are spreading the word about the Valley's natural and scenic places to visit and its diverse recreational opportunities. We want to tell you about the many distinctive crafts, foods, and other products for which New Hampshire and Vermont are so famous.

For News from the Byway Council ...

Membership in the Connecticut River Byway Council is open to any individual, corporation, organization, community, or agency. The Byway Council is hosted by the Connecticut River Joint Commissions.

A Steering Committee has formed of members elected from the following caucus groups:
• municipalities
• business organizations including chambers of commerce
• regional planning agencies
• state agencies
• natural resource interests
• recreation interests
• cultural resource interests
• agricultural interests

The Steering Committee meets at least four times a year to consider...

Policy
• carry out the purposes of the Connecticut River Byway Council;
• guide implementation of the Connecticut River Scenic Byway Study;
• develop guidance and criteria for elements of the Byway, to assist communities and organizations in planning Byway-related projects;
• review and advise the Vermont Scenery Preservation Council and the New Hampshire Scenic and Cultural Byway Advisory Council on funding applications;
• make policy decisions in furtherance of the purposes of the Council.

Promotion
• foster joint promotion on the part of the Connecticut River Byway states;
• provide forums, networks, and coordination for local activities;
• develop promotional materials for the Connecticut River Byway;
• oversee the selection of graphic representations of the Connecticut River Byway.

Stewardship
• foster protection of scenic and cultural resources;
• encourage and support land use planning that sustains the intrinsic qualities of the Connecticut River Byway;
• educate hosts and guests in stewardship of valley resources and assets;
• foster stewardship in all marketing endeavors.
